BROKEN BOW – David Schmidt has been named Broken Bow’s new City Administrator. The city council unanimously approved his appointment during their meeting Tuesday evening.

Schmidt currently serves as the City Council President. He replaces Dan Knoell, who was dismissed as administrator on Feb. 14.

Schmidt said he originally hadn’t considered himself for the position because he doesn’t hold a masters degree, which the city has traditionally required for administrators. But he said the thinking on the position evolved naturally in recent weeks.

He said the city has a number of projects currently in the works, highlighted by plans to develop the new Eagle Crest subdivision as well as the potential for a new wellness center, which he said is still in early planning stages.

Schmidt said he doesn’t have the typical administrator resume but he believes his experiences can help him. He is an Ansley native who holds two technical degrees from Southeast Community College in Milford and a bachelor’s degree in business from Bellevue University. He has been employed at BD for just under 23 years.

Schmidt was appointed to the city council in 2020 to fill the seat that was vacated when Rod Sonnichsen became mayor. His fellow council members elected him council president early last year and he won re-election for his seat last November.

Schmidt said he will remain a member of the council through their next meeting on April 25, when he will submit his resignation. He will start as City Administrator on April 27.
