BROKEN BOW – A large crowd turned out Thursday evening for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the newly built sod house at the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway Visitor Center in Broken Bow.

More than 40 volunteers helped build the structure over the course of the summer. Mike Evans has been involved in the project since it was first suggested in 2015 and emphasized the connection to the history of the area.

Rick Maas said it’s gratifying to have the house finished. He said there has already been a noticeable increase in visitors to the Big Red Barn since work on the house began.

The ribbon cutting was held in conjunction with the barn’s annual pie contest. This year’s competition had 29 entries with Barbara Ottun’s strawberry rhubarb pie taking first place.
