NORTH PLATTE – Portions of western and northern Custer County saw the highest snowfall totals from Monday’s storm that brought blizzard conditions to much of central Nebraska.

The National Weather Service in North Platte said that satellite images and various reports indicated that the heaviest band of snow stretched from northeast Lincoln county northeast through western Custer county, Blaine, Rock, Holt and Boyd counties.

The highest officially reported snow total was 16 inches near Arnold, while 15.5 inches was reported near Anselmo. To the northeast, 10.3 inches was reported near Burwell with eight inches near Taylor.

The heavy snow was accompanied by winds gusting as high as 50-60 miles per hour that led to blowing and drifting snow that made travel impossible in some places.

Many major highways, including Interstate 80 were still closed as of Tuesday morning, but gradually reopened throughout the day. By Tuesday afternoon, most major roads were back to mostly normal driving conditions.

Warmer weather should help melt the snow quickly, with highs forecast to rise into the 50s by Thursday.
