LINCOLN – All high school basketball games in Nebraska will be played using a shot clock next season.

The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) Board of Directors voted 6-2 on Thursday to expand the 35-second shot clock to all six classes.

Implementation has happened quickly across the state. Class A first began using the shot clock on a trial basis during the 2022-23 season. It was quickly made permanent and expanded to Class B this past season.

Earlier this year, smaller schools were told to plan on having shot clocks next season as expansion gained momentum.

The Board also voted unanimously to add a second classification for girls wrestling. The sport has seen a huge growth in popularity since it became officially sanctioned two years ago.

According to the NSAA website, there were 168 high school girls wrestling teams in the state this year.

The addition of a girls Class B is expected to lead to changes in the format for next year’s state tournament, which has seen the demand for tickets in recent years exceed the CHI Health Center’s capacity.

Also during Thursday’s meeting the board voted 6-2 to sign Jennifer Schwartz to a two year contract as NSAA Executive Director. Schwartz has served as Interim Director since her predecessor, Jay Bellar, retired in July 2023.
