Omaha-Lexington’s quest for the school’s first state championship in soccer came up short on Tuesday night as the Minutemen fell 2-0 to Omaha Skutt. It was the third time in four years that the two programs had met in the title game. The Skyhawks got off to a quick start as Ben Schendt scored in the 6th minute to give them an early 1-0 lead. Lexington outplayed Skutt in the midfield the rest of the first half but couldn’t find a way to score.

In the second half, Skutt scored on a header off of a corner kick as Leo Bailey connected to give them a 2-0 lead. Lexington outshot Skutt in the match 12-7 and had more corner chances but Skutt all state keeper Morgan Finkenbinder was outstanding getting the shutout. Lexington coach Joel Lemus spoke with KRVN’s Jayson Jorgensen and says the Minutemen just couldn’t capitalize in this one.

Lexington finishes the year at 15-7 and earns its third state runner up finish in the last four years. For Skutt its their fifth straight state championship which has never been done before in boys soccer in Nebraska.
