Fire Danger: Farmers urged to exercise extreme caution

Fire Danger: Farmers urged to exercise extreme caution
October 17th, 2024 | RRN Staff

Farmers and residents across the region are urged to take extra precautions, as dry conditions and high winds increase the risk of field fires.

The combination of extremely dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity is creating an environment primed for rapid fire spread.

Vegetation in many areas remains dormant and dead, with a significant fuel load ready to ignite. The region has not seen decent rainfall in over two months, and increasing drought conditions have left soil moisture levels dangerously low, with many areas below the 5th percentile statewide.

Today’s forecast includes sustained winds of 20-30 mph from the south, with gusts potentially reaching up to 50 mph in parts of eastern Nebraska. These winds will further exacerbate fire risk by allowing any small sparks to escalate quickly.

Water tankers, fire extinguishers, and discs should be on hand, especially in areas where harvesting is ongoing. It is crucial to be vigilant and prepared, as any fires that start and are not quickly contained could lead to devastating consequences.

Today’s heightened fire risk serves as a reminder for all in the area to exercise extreme caution and spread the word to keep everyone safe.

Tips for Nebraska Extension:

  1. Monitor Weather Conditions
    • Avoid harvesting during extreme fire weather
  2. Be Harvest-Ready
    • Carry a 10 lb ABC Fire extinguisher in the combine cab
  3. Keep Equipment Clean
    • Regularly clean your combine
  4. Park Smart;
    • Create firebreaks by disking areas around parked equipment
