BURWELL – Region 26 Emergency Management says there has been a breach in the Taylor/Ord Canal south of Burwell
Emergency Manager Alma Beland said they were notified of water on county roads in the area around 6 a.m. Monday.
She said two county roads south of Burwell had water flowing over them and into the surrounding cornfields. The flow of water is being monitored by Garfield Emergency Management. At this time water is not expected to be a hazard to the city of Burwell.
Barricades have been put in place along 823rd Road and 466th Avenue and the Irrigation District for the areas where water is flowing over the roads.
Beland said the canal has been shut down to take the water level down and the North Loup River Public Power & Irrigation District will be working on repairs.
The cause of the breach is unclear at this time. The public is asked to avoid the affected areas until further notice. Updates will be shared through the Region 26 Emergency Management Facebook page.
