Area players to take part in New West All-Star Games

KEARNEY – The annual New West All-Star Volleyball and Basketball games will be held this Wednesday and Thursday in Axtell with plenty of area athletes taking part.

The showcase features teams of recently graduated seniors representing the Southwest Conference, LouPlatte Conference, Fort Kearny Conference and Republican Plains Athletic Conference.

Things will get going with volleyball on Wednesday.

The Southwest Conference team will include Broken Bow’s Halle McCaslin as well as four members of Gothenburg’s squad that took third place at the state tournament.

The LouPlatte team includes Arcadia/Loup City’s Libby Ference along with Marin Reilly and Brooke Fox from Ord. Skye Griess of Arcadia/Loup City will coach the team.

The Fort Kearny Conference team is loaded after both Sumner-Eddyville-Miller and Overton won state titles last fall and Amherst finished runner-up. Mikah O’Neill and Jenna Claflin will represent SEM on the team along with four Overton players and three from Amherst. They’ll also be joined by Natalie Rasmussen and Jaycee Flood from Pleasanton.

The basketball games will be played on Thursday.

The Southwest squad will include MaKinley Tobey and Halle McCaslin of Broken Bow for the girls and Evan Cyboron on the boys team.

The LouPlatte girls team includes Sarah McKeon from Ravenna and Ord’s Maggie Fischer and Marin Reilly. The boys team includes Kaden Brodersen from Ravenna, Trey Van Slyke from Arcadia/Loup City and Ord’s Blake Hinrichs and Talan Bruha.

The Fort Kearny girls team includes all five starters from Overton’s state championship team. Mikah O’Neill and Cayleigh Jackson will represent SEM with Natalie Rasmussen from Pleasanton. The boys squad includes three members of Amherst’s championship team as well as Ansley-Litchfield’s Ryan Bailey and Jace Rosentraeder and Colt Shroeder from SEM. The Fort Kearny boys will be coached by Matt Drew from Ansley-Litchfield and Darby Line from SEM.

Both nights the action will begin at 5 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Nebraska Kidney Association.
