UPDATED 5/3/24: Compost Days for this Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th are canceled due to the amount of rain received and the saturation of the compost.  ALCC is still planning on having their Compost Days on Saturday, May 11 and have added the date of Saturday, May 18. Both days will be from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

BROKEN BOW – Adams Land & Cattle (ALCC) will again share its nutrient-rich and organic compost with local gardeners during the fifth annual Adams Compost Days.

Custer County residents are encouraged to bring buckets and stop at the loadout facility, just north of the South Lot entrance on Highway 21. They will be giving out compost on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, May 5, from noon to 3 p.m., and Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Manure from cattle at Adams is broken down and turned into a valuable compost product that increases the nutrients and water-holding capacity of soils. The material is turned 3-5 times, which allows the surface area to be exposed to oxygen and the raw material to quickly heat over 120 degrees, which is the temperature needed to kill any weed seeds. The end product is nutrient-rich and odor-less compost.

“With our continued focus on sustainability and recycling natural resources, the composting process creates a great product for the health of the soil,” Adams President Dr. Abram Babcock said. “We know that many of our neighbors enjoy planting gardens and we thought this would be a great way to give back to our community.”
