Central Nebraska farmer anticipates strong harvest despite hailstorms

Crops in central Nebraska have benefited from consistent moisture throughout the year, despite enduring four waves of hail, according to Don Cantrell, a farmer near Merna.

Cantrell mentioned that while the hail completely wiped several neighboring pivots, his farm was relatively fortunate, with only a few of their pivots losing about half of the yield.

“We’ve had a lot of rain, and the grass is still green on all the hills, which is very rare in August,” Cantrell said. ”So, we’re looking at a tremendous dryland crop coming if it hasn’t been hit by hail.”

Following a discussion with the local Pioneer dealer, Cantrell is optimistic about a strong harvest this year, as the dealer reported most yields are coming in between 260 and 280 bushels.

With harvest still a few weeks away, Cantrell noted that they haven’t needed to irrigate as much, thanks to continued rainfall and the maturing crops. This has allowed them to catch up on other projects.

Cantrell’s comments were part of the weekly Rural Radio Network series Fridays in the Fields, brought to you by FNBO, the Great Big Small Bank.
