Briar Cliff Baseball takes Doubleheader from Mount Marty

The Charger secured the series win against the Lancers, winning both games at home Saturday afternoon. The Cliff came from behind in game one to win 9-8, before a pitching gem from Carter Schorg led them to a 6-1 victory in game two.

Game one, W – 9-8,

After giving up two runs in the top of the first, the Cliff quickly responded with a run after Diego Trujillo scored on a Lancer error. Cade Marquardt followed up with a RBI-double to left field to drive in Cam Reimer.

The Lancers in the top of the second took control of the contest, carding in five runs to take a 7-2 lead.

Drew Petersen in the bottom of the fourth blasted a three-run shot over the right field wall to cut the lead within two.

Trailing by three heading into the final inning, Diego Trujillo got into scoring position with one out after he stole second base. Reimer hit an RBI-single to left center to drive in Trujillo. Marquardt put the pressure on after he singled to center field and put runners on first and second.

A RBI-single from Jake Chronic cut the lead down to one. Easton Cone was hit by a pitch during his plate appearance to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Trujillo tagged up on a fly ball to right field and dove into second base, evading the tag and represented the game winning run. Chronic again came in clutch for the Cliff, with a RBI-single to left field drove in Trujillo.

Game two, W – 6-1

Schorg pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out eight in the contest.

Trujillo carded the game’s first run in the bottom of the first, after his sacrifice ground out drove in Walker Moore.

In the bottom of the second, Damon Schmid put the Cliff up 3-0 with a two-run shot over the right-center field wall.

In the bottom of the fourth, Petersen blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall to put BCU up 5-1.

Chronic added an insurance run in the top of the fifth with an RBI-double. Chronic tried stretching it for a triple but was thrown out.

The Chargers improved to 24-18 (16-8 GPAC) and will conclude their regular season with a four-game series against Northwestern. Game one is slated for Friday April 26 at Bishop Mueller Complex.
