Severe thunderstorms and high straight-line winds ripped through Waco late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

The storms caused power outages, inflicted severe damage to crops and overturned semis on the interstate. Shortly after midnight, I-80 was closed at the Waco interchange, located just east of York.

Reports included semi pileups, overturned pivots, destroyed grain bins, and damaged corn and soybean fields.

Despite recent moisture, much of eastern Nebraska is still in extreme to exceptional drought. According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, all of York County is in a D4 Exceptional Drought, which is the worst rating the monitor gives.

Last June, York County experienced similar storms that overturned pivots and destroyed crops.
