SAN DIEGO – Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Griess, a native of Sutton, Nebraska, supports versatile missions while serving at Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Three.

Griess is a 2012 Sutton High School graduate and in 2016 earned a Business & Criminology degree from the University of Nebraska. Griess joined the Navy six years ago.

“I joined the Navy to travel, see the world, serve and get out of landlocked America,” said Griess.

Skills and values similar to those found in Sutton are important to succeed in the military.

“Lessons I learned from my hometown are working within a smaller community, hard work and having a sense of accountability,” said Griess.

These lessons have helped Griess while serving with the Navy.

EOD Mobile Unit Three, which is a sub-component of Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, provides deployable EOD platoons to eliminate hazards from aviation, surface, ground and improvised ordnance and provides diving and demolition services to eliminate hazards from subsurface and underwater mine ordnance.

With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.

As a member of the Navy, Griess is part of a world-class organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy is important to national defense because we control the waters and coastlines,” said Griess. “We do this to deter any incoming threats through a show of force and partnerships,”

As Griess and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.

“Serving in the Navy is important to me because it gives me a chance to serve and protect the freedom that has been given to me,” added Griess.

Griess is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I’m thankful to my family, instructors and teammates while I have served in the Navy,” added Griess.
