Hastings, Neb. — A winter storm is expected to drop heavy snow across south-central & east-central Nebraska into north-central Kansas on Monday. Heavy snow along with increasing north winds will lead to difficult travel conditions Monday through early Tuesday morning.

Meteorologist Aaron Mangels with the National Weather Service in Hastings says there is a pretty good chance that many areas will get up to six-inches of snow, with some areas receiving more than that. Mangels says winds will pick up and create blowing snow and diminished visibility….

“Near blizzard conditions are possible at times…we are going to have increasing winds through the system especially Monday afternoon through the overnight which is going to result in some very poor visibility during the afternoon and Monday night and difficult travel. There is pretty high confidence in timing on this system. The snow is going to be primarily 8 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.”

Travel will be very difficult, especially Monday afternoon through Monday night. Areas of light to moderate snow, possibly mixed with rain along and south of the Nebraska, Kansas state line, will develop Monday morning.

Snow will become widespread and heavy, at times, late Monday morning through Monday evening. Winds will increase substantially from the north Monday evening and overnight, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph causing blowing and drifting snow and poor visibility that will continue past dawn Tuesday morning.
