GRAND ISLAND – The Southern Public Power District (SPPD) began rolling out changes to their irrigation
application process. The updated irrigation application process was approved by the SPPD Board of Directors at their September 11, 2024, board meeting.
“These updates aim to streamline the application procedure, providing clearer guidelines and enhancing service for all of our irrigators,” said Amanda Groff, public relations director.

Key changes to the irrigation application process include:

  • Application Period: The irrigation application window will now run annually from September 1 through February 1 for the upcoming irrigation season. Customers are encouraged to apply within this period to ensure timely service by June 1.
  • Desktop Estimate: Upon inquiry for a new or upgraded irrigation service, customers will receive a desktop estimate, providing an approximate cost for the installation of the requested electric service.
  • Irrigation Application & Fee: To proceed with a detailed estimate, customers must submit a signed
irrigation application along with a $500 non-refundable application fee. This fee will be credited towards the actual estimate and applied to the overall construction cost if the project proceeds. However, if the customer decides not to move forward, the fee will not be refunded or transferred.
  • Contribution in Aid of Construction (CIAC): In alignment with the changes, the Board has updated the Districts CIAC rate to $100 per horsepower. This contribution is an investment in the new growth of the SPPD system.

“Southern Public Power District remains committed to offering efficient, reliable services to our valued customers. As well as, ensuring that irrigation needs are met in a timely and cost-effective manner,” said Groff.
