The Nebraska Prairie Museum will be holding a grand opening for its new faux sod house on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. The program will feature sod house history, information on the National Sod House Society, and the museum’s future programs plans will be highlighted.

After much planning and fund raising, the Museum hired Randy and Rita Mitchell of Wild Rooms, LLC from Michigan to build the new “soddie” inside the front entrance of the museum. the Mitchells are experienced in building indoor sets for major chains such as Cabela’s.

After pre-building the components, the couple came to Holdrege and were able to construct the sod house in ten days. Since then, Museum Curator, Sam Banzhaf, has been working on setting up the inside and inventorying all items.

The museum is located one-half mile north of Holdrege on Highway 183. It is open this summer Monday thru Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is by freewill donation.
