Gov. Pillen holds news conference to address issue of Property Taxes in Nebraska

July 18th, 2024 | Connie Green

Nebraska is among the states with the highest property taxes – this is what Governor Jim Pillen said in a news conference on Thursday in Lincoln. He added that some sales tax exemptions, such as for food and medicine make sense, other exemptions are only on the books due to a paid lobbyist who helped push that exemption. The governor wants those exemptions looked at more closely. Another way he plans to reduce property taxes is to start discussing administrative bloat in school systems and use of bond issues approved by voters. Special interest tax breaks will also be reviewed and possibly altered in an effort to reduce property taxes. The governor has called a special session of the Unicameral next week to tackle the matter.
