Farm Bureau can’t overcome first inning

Holdrege, Neb. – The Holdrege Farm Bureau Seniors dropped their Thursday night contest 6-3 against the Gothenburg Melons.

It took about one inning for Holdrege starting pitcher Beau Jensen to settle in, but that proved to be the difference by the end of the game. Gothenburg was able to get four hits in the first, including two doubles, off of Jensen. The quick start by the Melons generated three runs. Once the dust settled, however, Jensen put together another solid effort in his second start of the season. He allowed only two more hits after the ill-fated first inning.

Holdrege was able to cut the Gothenburg lead to two after a three-run fourth inning, but that was all the Farm Bureau offense could muster. Wes Geiken put together a solid performance on the mound for the Melons as well. He scattered four hits in six innings, while only giving up one earned run.

In the end, it was another performance by Holdrege Farm Bureau that showed they have all of the pieces for a great season. A few early season mistakes, along with some hard hits that haven’t found the open gaps, have hindered the quick start Holdrege would have liked. Head Coach Mike Waller knows that those things are temporary.

Farm Bureau looks ahead with a lot of optimism as the season heats up next week. The middle infield continues to be a strength after Holdrege was able to turn a double play once again thanks to the quick hands of second baseman Matt Janssen. Catcher Clay Bohr continues to show growth and ability behind the plate, and a deep pitching staff will pay dividends down the road.

Gothenburg improved to 2-0. Holdrege fell to 1-2 on the season and will travel to Imperial on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

After the Imperial game, Holdrege will get a few days off before beginning a 10-day stretch where they’ll play seven games. The full KUVR broadcast schedule can be found on the Sports Calendar.
