Minden, Nebraska, farmer Dan Kristensen is ready to begin planting corn and soybeans this week.

Speaking to the Rural Radio Network last week, he provided insights into the ongoing fieldwork and planting preparations for the 2024 season.

Amidst a recent rainfall that slowed operations midweek, Kristensen reflects on the challenges posed by dry conditions and persistent winds.

“I think we’ve had 10 inches of wind is what you’d call it,” he joked. “So it’s been very dry here, a lot of fieldwork has been done. A lot of guys have gotten fertilizing done. Not too many planters have rolled yet just besides trying to make sure everything works.”

As planting approaches, Kristensen outlined plans to start with both corn and soybeans, with the added venture of seed corn planting for the first time on their farm. He emphasized the economic benefits and niche market potential of adding seed corn to their operation, highlighting the importance of finding additional avenues for farm profitability.

As for his favorite part of the planting season, Kristensen cited listening to Husker baseball on the radio while working in the field.
