As wheat harvest progresses across the Midwest, many farmers agree that this year has produced some of the best wheat they have seen in years.
Cierra Dugan is the sixth generation on the seven-generation Dugan Farms in Leonardville, Kansas.
“This is probably the highest-yielding year that I’ve ever seen on our operation,” Dugan said.
Dugan mentioned that rain amounts varied across their fields this year, but the most recent field she harvested was averaging 80 to 100 bushels per acre.
“I’ve seen it when it’s 20 (bpa), and now I get to see it at its highest.”
She said the growing season consisted of little to no snow, variable rain, and excessive heat, but the crop still managed to grow well.
Dugan now lives and farms near Murray, Nebraska, with her own family but said she returns to Leonardville to help during the wheat harvest.
