Karen Sue “Susie” (Samuelson) Daake, 76 years of age, left for her Heavenly home on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family.  Susie was born on July 7, 1947, at 10:30 p.m. at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege, Nebraska.  Susie was the only daughter, and fifth child of Nylise Orville Woodrow and Frances (Nelson) Samuelson.  She attended rural country school R-3 when it was new.  Her family then moved to present home in 1953 and she attended and graduated from Bertrand High School in 1965.

As she was growing up, her first love was horses, and they still are today!  Her dad would not buy her a horse as he had bad health and was not supposed to ride them, or it would kill him.  He finally gave in when Susie was 17 and she broke horses for extra income.  She belonged to the Mid Valley Saddle Club for several years, until it was dissolved. During her high school years, she would help her dad farm.  Growing up as the youngest child, when you were told to do something, you learned quickly not to tell them, “I can’t.”  Their reply was, “Can’t never did anything!”, and walked off so you had to do it anyway.

Susie and Keith Daake met at their cousin’s wedding, Susie’s cousin, Joyce Matson, and Keith’s cousin, Dale Daake.  Susie and Keith were united in marriage on July 20, 1968, at the Adullam Lutheran Church in rural Bertrand.  Following their marriage, they worked at a lumber yard in Lincoln, Nebraska, for 1 ½ years, and then moved back to the area.  The couple worked at Plectron for a year until their daughter, Jackie was born and then Susie became a stay-at-home mom.  Susie was a member of the Friendly Neighborhood Club, a women’s club at church.  She also enjoyed sewing and quilting until the big “C” came along.

Susie and Keith were blessed with three children:  Jackie, John, and Julie; and special nephew, Randy (wife, Cheri) Daake, and a baker’s dozen of grandchildren: 12 grandsons and one granddaughter.  She has enjoyed watching all or most of their sporting events.  “I will miss attending their final events.”

Susie was a lifetime member of the Adullam Lutheran Church.  She served on the church counsel and will miss the close bond with church members.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Orville and Edna Daake; sisters-in-law:  Marlene Samuelson, Maxine Samuelson, Linda Daake, and Elaine Koratsky; uncles and aunts:  Thor and Zeadelle Matson; Dellman and Dorothy Samuelson; E L and Bonnie Samuelson; and Lowell Nelson; and two nephews:  Darwin Samuelson, and Billy Elliott.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Keith Daake of rural Bertrand; three children:  Jackie (John) Holt; John (Michelle) Daake; and Julie (James) Nelson; 13 grandchildren:  Josh (fiancée, Shiani) Holt; JC (Kylen) Holt; Joe (girlfriend, Madison) Holt; Jory (girlfriend, Lindsay) Holt; and Autumn Holt; Wyatt and Samuel Daake; and Jonah, Thunder, Hunter, Noah, Creed, and Zeke Nelson; her brothers:  Allen (Darlene) Samuelson; Myron (Sharilyn) Samuelson; Ivan Samuelson; and Darryl (Karen) Samuelson; aunt, Gloria Nelson; one brother-in-law, Fred (Shirley) Daake; along with many nieces and nephews, and extended family members.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bertrand, with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
