Genevieve Ziems, 91, of Kearney

A funeral service for Genevieve D. Ziems will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Jan Gluth King officiating. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Bertrand, Nebraska.

Genevieve Dorothy Ziems, 91 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska, formerly of Bertrand, Nebraska passed away, on June 27, 2024, at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. Gen was born on the farm near Huntley, Nebraska on January 14, 1933, the second of five children, born to Julius and Fay (Feusner) Schluntz. She received her education from Huntley Public School and graduated with the class of 1950. Gen pursued higher education at Lincoln School of Commerce.

Following her education, Gen worked in the office for the Corp. of Engineers while they built the Harlan County Dam. She then moved to Manhattan, Kansas, and assisted with the Tuttle Creek Dam and then moved to Holdrege and worked for Person and Dier Law Firm.

On November 28, 1954, Gen was united in marriage to Wendell Ziems at the Methodist Church in Huntley, and to this union, two daughters were born: Debra Lynn, and Sandra Beth. The couple made their home in Bertrand until she moved to Kearney ten years ago.

Gen loved to sew, play cards, and talk politics. She was an avid Nebraska football fan. Gen enjoyed being at the cabin at the lake and was able to take time to relax there. Family was very important to Gen. She had a great sense of humor and would surprise everyone with her quick wit. Gen was a member of Hope Lutheran Church of rural Smithfield, Nebraska.

Gen was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Ziems; her parents; one son-in-law, Ralph Mifflin; two brothers: Merwin Schluntz; LeRoy Schluntz and wife Vicki; a niece; a great-nephew; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Herman and Marie Ziems; two brothers-in-law; Wayne Ziems; and Willis Ziems and wife, Hideko.

Gen is survived by her two daughters: Deb Ziems; and Sandy Mifflin both of Kearney; one granddaughter, Amelia Zurovski and her significant other Wyatt Godtel; one brother, Clinton Schluntz and wife, Vivian of Hollinger, Nebraska; one sister, Jean Beiriger and husband, William of rural Holdrege; sister-in-law: Sharon Schluntz; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials in Gen’s honor are suggested to the family for a later designation.
