Genevieve Agnes “Gen” Engle, 94, of Bertrand

A Mass of Christian Burial for Genevieve A. Engle will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Smithfield, Nebraska, with Father Jay Buhman as Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery, Bertrand, Nebraska.

Genevieve Agnes “Gen” Engle, 94 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at the Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand. Genevieve was born on January 7, 1930, in Dante, South Dakota, one of ten children born to Jacob and Agnes (Base) Kocer.  She was baptized as an infant in Dante.  She attended a one room country school and then attended and graduated from Rochester Lourdes High School, with the class of 1948.  She also graduated from a Dale Carnegie Course.

Genevieve worked as an Office Manager for six years at the ASCS Office in Olmsted, Minnesota.

On August 28, 1954, Genevieve was united in marriage to Robert Engle at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rochester, Minnesota.  The couple made their home in Rochester and later, Bertrand, where she was a doting mother for her family’s needs.  They were blessed with six children:  Gale, Ann Marie, Bruce, Susan, Mark, and Peter.

Genevieve enjoyed camping and hiking throughout the United States, and gardening, especially her flower gardens.

In 1977, Genevieve and Robert bought the Bertrand Herald.  They specialized in Commercial Printing of sale bills, brochures, pamphlets, calendars, and the Bertrand High School yearbook.  They were Co-Publishers of the Bertrand Herald for over 27 years, retiring in 2005.  Gen was a member of the Nebraska Press Association, the National Newspaper Association, St. John’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Bertrand Chamber of Commerce.

Gen was preceded in death by her parents; two sons-in-law:  Craig Forster, and Bryce Johnson; and all her siblings.

She leaves to celebrate her life; her husband, Robert G. “Bob” Engle of Bertrand; her children:  Gale Engle of Lincoln; Ann Marie Forster of Smithfield; Bruce Engle and wife, Ruth of Rochester, Minnesota; Susan Johnson of Durand, Wisconsin; Mark Engle and wife, Deb of Menomonie, Wisconsin; and Peter Engle and wife, Paige of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; twelve grandchildren:  Leif Forster; Emerald Fielder; Nigel Forster and wife, Shelby; Terry Engle; April Boigenzahn and husband, Brady; Nathan Besmer and wife, Jinae; Rebecca Manci and husband, Lavern; Zachary Besmer and wife, Jenelle; Trudy Johnson and husband, Phil; Justin Engle, Cory Engle; and Robert Engle; 21 great-grandchildren:  Cole, Kaylie, Gavin; Serenity, Damon, and Jasper; Kyler and Jaelyn; Ben, Jordyn, Kal, Waylon; Destiny and Benjamin; Gabriel and Bobek; Grayden, Trace, Natalie, and Easton; and Bridgette; along with many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Smithfield, with the family present.  A Vigil Service with Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. at the church.

A memorial has been established in Gen’s honor and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
