John Zackery, age 84, of Holdrege

Memorial Services for John Zackery will be held on Friday, April 9, 2021, at 11:00 a.m.  at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Jan Gluth King officiating.  Military Honors will be provided by the Navy Funeral Honors Team at the church.

John Allen Zackery, 84 years of age, of Holdrege, died, on March 31, 2021, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.  John was born on September 9, 1936, the eldest of three children, born to Willis “Wid” and Edith (Marshbanks) Zackery.  John was baptized on May 13, 1976, at the Bethel Lutheran Church.  John received his education from Holdrege High School, and graduated with the class of 1955.

Following his graduation, John enlisted into the United States Navy on August 2, 1955 in San Francisco, California.  John received the China Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.  John was honorably discharged on August 3, 1959, and then served in the Navy Reserves until 1963.

On May 30, 1960, John was united in marriage to Janice Elaine Asche at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Republican City, Nebraska.  The couple made their home in Holdrege and were blessed with three children:  Crystal, John R., and Lori.  Together the couple enjoyed fishing, attending dances, and playing cards.  John also enjoyed woodworking, especially carving ducks.

John worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for over 40 years.  As an Engineer for the Survey Crew, he helped survey two major projects:   Interstate 80 from Grand Island, Nebraska to Big Springs, Nebraska, and Highway 6 & 34 from Holdrege to McCook, Nebraska, along with many other projects.

John was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagle’s #3132 of Holdrege, and the ELKS.

John was preceded in death by: his parents, Willis and Edith Zackery; his sister, Julie Taylor; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Otto and Louise (Jurgens) Asche; and a brother-in-law, Neil Asche.

John is survived by his wife, Janice Zackery of Holdrege; three children:  Crystal Anderson and her husband, Rich of Lincoln, Nebraska; John R. Zackery and his wife, Kelley of Elwood, Nebraska; and Lori Beckman and her husband, Brent of Lincoln; six grandchildren:  Antona Schulz and her husband, Seth of Elkhorn, Nebraska; Alec Zackery of Lexington, Nebraska; Breann Spurling and her husband, Kyle of Omaha, Nebraska; SaraDonna Beckman of Omaha, Nebraska; Gina Beckman of Omaha; and Dayton Zackery of Elwood; four great-grandchildren:  Allison and Christina Zackery; Elliott John Zackery; and one baby Spurling on the way; one brother, Bob Zackery and his wife, Joyce of Holdrege; one sister, Pat Harms and her husband, Virgil of Blue Hill, Nebraska; along with extended family and friends.

There will be no memorial book signing or visitation.

A memorial has been established in John’s honor, and kindly suggested to the Bethel Lutheran Church or to the family to be designated at a later date.
