Lincoln, Neb. — A special legislative session ended last week (Aug. 20, 2024) with legislation to reduce property taxes an average of 3% statewide and capping property taxes collections by cities and counties. Following the session, Nebraska State Treasurer Tom Briese said there clearly is more work to be done and LB 1 is exhibit A. LB 34 would ensure that property taxpayers benefit from an existing tax relief program, while capping property tax collections by cities and counties. A couple of budget bills accompanying the plan would provide roughly $139 million of the $185 million needed to fund the plan.
