Lincoln, Neb. — The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will hold a special meeting Wednesday, May 31, at 9 a.m. to assign direction and oversight of Husker Athletics to the NU system president. Husker Athletics now just answers to the UNL chancellor.

The board will also hear a budget review.

The meeting was called for by Board Chairman Tim Clare. It will be held at Varner Hall and by videoconference. It will also be live-streamed at www.nebraska.edu

In a joint statement, Clare and regent Rob Schafer said it makes sense for the regents and president to have oversight of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at UNL.

The NU Board of Regents’ Executive Committee recommended a change be made to bylaws to allow for the Athletics leadership change. The proposed change will be a “for information only” item at the May 31 meeting. It will be brought to a vote at the board’s June 22 meeting.

If approved by the board at its June meeting, the bylaw change would take effect July 1.

Chairman Clare also wants the board to have a public review of the University of Nebraska’s financial status, budget planning strategies and future outlooks. Clare said it is crucial for the board to have a discussion before its June 22 meeting, when regents will consider the university’s proposed 2023-24 operating budget.

In April, University of Nebraska Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green proposed $10.8 million in permanent cuts to address dipping enrollment and less tuition revenue.

The cuts are aimed at helping address a $23 million budget deficit that the university is currently facing.

Final cuts are expected to be announced before June 1.
