Elm Creek family loses home in weekend fire

     An Elm Creek family was able to evacuate their home after fire broke out over the weekend but, in the end it was deemed a total loss from the fire and smoke damage.   Elm Creek Fire & Rescue was called to the Oak Ridge Trailer Court around 9:34am Saturday.  Smoke and flames were visible on one end of the structure as they arrived on the scene.  Kearney and Overton volunteer fire departments provided mutual aid.   

    The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, but remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.  Also assisting at the scene were Buffalo County Sheriff’s office, Nebraska State Fire Marshal, Nebraska Public Power District, Black Hills Energy and American Red Cross.

     According to a Facebook posting, Elm Creek responded with 4 trucks and 9 personnel, KVFD responded with 2 trucks and 8 personnel, and Overton responded with 1 truck and 4 personnel. 

The Elm Creek Fire Department thanked those providing assistance and reminds everyone to check the smoke alarms in your home and ensure all units are in working order.
