It was a typical Scottsbluff vs. McCook on Friday night at Bearcat Stadium. The teams traded blows in the first half and then Scottsbluff got the only points of the second half in a 21-14 win.
Scottsbluff sophomore running back Sebastien Boyle had another huge night, he rushed for 244 yards and scored two more touchdowns to give him a total of 19 on the season. Boyle now with 1,179 yards (unofficially) on the season.
After an opening play fumble from the Bison it was Scottsbluff with a short field and they’d capitalize with a two yard touchdown run from quarterback Braeden Stull to go in front 7-0 early.
McCook got a huge first half from running back Jacob Gomez-Wilson, who ran for a total of 110 yards in the first half including a 48 yard touchdown with 2:02 to play in the first quarter.
In the second quarter both teams put up seven more. McCook took the lead on a 3 yard run by quarterback Adam Dugger with 4:23 to play in the half and then the Cats got it even with Boyle’s first touchdown run of the night with 2:07 to play in the half.
McCook pushed the ball down the field in a two minute drive but a holding call and a grounding call set them back and they wound up missing a 51 yard field goal right before halftime.
The second half featured plenty of defense, one long run, and one key injury.
Scottsbluff got the ball to start the third quarter and scored inside the first minute on a 73 yard touchdown run by Boyle to go in front 21-14. That was it for the scoring.
The one key injury was Gomez-Wilson, who did not play one snap in the second half and McCook’s offense couldn’t generate much at all. After rushing for a team total of 190 in the first half the Bison could only muster 29 yards rushing in the second half.
In 14 quarters this year with Gomez-Wilson unavailable McCook hasn’t scored a touchdown.
With the win the Bearcats make it a five game winning streak as they improved to 6-2 and they’ve got a district title and a first round home game in the playoffs in their sights if they win can win next week at Gering, who lost a heartbreaker tonight at home to Mitchell.
