SBCo Sheriff’s Office Warns of ‘Jury Duty Scam’ Making the Rounds
September 18th, 2024 | Ryan Murphy

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of yet another scam hitting the area, with the goal of causing financial loss to its victims.

“We have received multiple reports today at least one confirmed loss of thousands of dollars in the jury duty scam.,” says Sheriff Mark Overman. ”Some callers were on the verge of losing many thousands of dollars when they called our office.”

Scammers call people, claiming to be employees of Sheriff’s Office.  Victim caller ID shows the accurate phone number of the Sheriff’s Office.  Overman says these are spoof calls, and says that these suspects can decide what number shows up on caller ID.

The caller claims that the victim missed jury duty, and they will be arrested unless they pay a fine immediately by depositing money into bitcoin machine.

“No law enforcement agency will ever call someone and ask them to make a deposit in a bitcoin machine or purchase cash cards.” adds Overman.

Please contact the Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency if you have questions about any suspicious call or request for money.
