A grassfire broke out last night on the east edge of Scottsbluff, and the cause has been identified as fireworks.

The Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department responded to a fire just north of the former Scottsbluff Inn on Highway 26 around 10:15 p.m.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 11 p.m., and confirm that discarded fireworks were found in the area.

Officials plead with the public to refrain from discharging fireworks near dry grass, as well as make sure you keep water on hand and place your fireworks in the water before placing them in the trash.
