WSC Softball Drops Pair of Games on Senior Day to Concordia-St. Paul

Wayne, Neb. — Despite a pair of hits in each game from freshman Jordyn Klein and a 3 for 6 day at the plate by senior Abby Husing the Wayne State softball team dropped Senior Day games to Concordia-St. Paul Saturday afternoon 5-2 and 8-5 in Northern Sun Conference play at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. CSP improves to 37-13 and 19-7 in the NSIC as WSC drops to 8-40 and 4-20 in conference play.

The opener saw Wayne State hold a 2-1 lead after four innings until the visiting Golden Bears belted three home runs to cap a four-run fifth inning to rally for a 5-2 win.

CSP scored the first run of the game in the top of the third to grab a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats used three hits to score two runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 2-1 lead. Husing led off with a single. Klein singled through the left side to put runners and second and third and both players scored when freshman Jordyn Rochholz singled to center field giving WSC a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Bears then belted three home runs in the fifth and used a Wildcat error to score four times and take a 5-2 lead to cap the scoring.

Both teams had eight hits in the opener. Klein was 2 for 4 with a double. Emilee Marth added a pinch-hit double while Rochholz, Lillie Timm, Dylan Sweeney, Mary Krystofiak and Husing each singled.

Junior starter Samantha Felt pitched six innings while senior Callie Carraher worked the final inning.

The second game saw Wayne State rally from a 4-0 deficit to grab a 5-4 lead in the fifth, only to watch the Golden Bears battle back with the final four runs of the game to cap an 8-5 win.

CSP scored three runs in the opening inning and another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

Wayne State had five hits to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-4 advantage. Dylan Sweeney had a two-run single while Timm and Klein each produced RBI singles in the inning.

Concordia-St. Paul responded with two runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 6-5 and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to finish with an 8-5 victory.

The Golden Bears held a 12-9 edge in hits over WSC. Klein had another 2 for 4 game with an RBI to lead WSC at the plate while Husing finished 2 for 3 with a run scored. Rochholz, Timm, Marth and Sweeney each had singles.

Junior starter Grace Lucka (6-10) suffered the pitching loss throwing a complete game.

Wayne State is scheduled to host Winona State, weather permitting, Sunday at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex starting at 12 p.m.
