Wayne, Neb. — Southwest Minnesota State recorded 6-1 and 3-2 win over Wayne State Wednesday afternoon in a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader played at Mustang Field in Marshall, Minnesota.  WSC falls to 6-30 and 2-10 in the league while SMSU is now 17-22 and 8-8 in conference play.

The first game saw the host Mustangs hold Wayne State to just three hits as SMSU picked up a 6-1 win.

SMSU scored first with a single run in the second, but WSC came back and tied the score in the top of the third at 1-1 as Dylan Sweeney doubled down the right field line and scored on a Jordyn Klein single.

The Mustangs snapped the tie score with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the 6-1 victory.

Sweeney’s double was the lone extra base hit of the contest.  Klein singled and had an RBI while Jordyn Rochholz had a single.

Starting pitcher Sami Felt suffered the pitching loss in four innings of work.  Grace Lucka worked the final two innings in the circle.

The second game saw the Mustangs hold off a seventh inning rally by WSC to record a 3-2 win.

Both teams scored in the first inning.  Mary Krystofiak’s single scored Jordyn Klein, who led off the game with a single.

After SMSU took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, the ‘Cats battled back and tied the score with a run in the fourth as Hayley Murphy singled and scored on a Sweeney double to make the score 2-2.

The Mustangs regained the lead with a run in the fifth inning for a 3-2 advantage.

WSC threatened to tie the score in the seventh as the ‘Cats got a single from Klein and Rochholz reached on a fielder’s choice/Mustang error to put runners on first and second with just one out.  But SMSU stopped the threat with a strike out and ground out to end the game as the Mustangs held on for the 3-2 win.

Both teams had seven hits in the game.  Klein was 2 for 4 while Sweeney doubled.  Rochholz singled and scored along with Murphy.  Masyn Bunnell and Krystofiak also singled.

Sophomore Sophie Stuart pitched a complete game, allowing just three runs on seven hits.

The Wildcats are on the road again this weekend playing NSIC doubleheaders at Minnesota Crookston Saturday (12 p.m.) and Sunday at Bemidji State (12 p.m.)
