Wayne, Neb. — Luke Sims of Wayne State College was announced Monday as the Northern Sun Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in Saturday’s 10-7 victory over MSU Moorhead at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.  It’s the first time that Sims has collected NSIC Player of the Week honors.

Sims, a 5-11, 285 pound sophomore defensive lineman from Omaha (Creighton Prep HS/Iowa Western CC), recorded eight tackles, three sacks for 22 yards and four quarterback hurries against the Dragons to help Wayne State clinch a share of the NSIC regular season title and an NCAA Division II playoff berth.  He had four solo and four assisted tackles and was named Egg Bowl Most Valuable Player while helping the WSC defense hold MSU Moorhead to just 193 yards of total offense.

Wayne State, 9-2 on the season, has qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs and will travel to #19 Minnesota State to face the Mavericks in a Super Region 4 first round contest starting at 12 p.m.  The two teams met in the regular season with Wayne State outscoring MSU in Wayne 41-33 on October 8th.
