The United States Secretary of Agriculture made a stop in Omaha, Nebraska, last week to host a roundtable discussion on a summer meal program.

Secretary Tom Vilsack said the purpose of his visit was to learn about the summer meal program funded by the USDA and hear from those directly involved on a local level. “SUN Meals” are provided to children 18 and younger at no cost throughout the summer months and are facilitated by schools, parks or other community centers.

During the event, held at Girls, Inc., several Nebraska policy, education, and medical representatives shared the needs of the state and feedback about the various nutritional supplement programs.

Secretary Vilsack also shared information about USDA support for those affected by flooding in the area and a look at the Packers and Stockyards Act that his team has been formulating.
