OMAHA, Neb. — Junior Kenzie Schopfer recorded the first perfect game for the Bluejays since 2006, lifted Creighton to an 8-0 victory in five innings over Georgetown on Friday, March 29. The win was highlighted by back-to-back home runs for Creighton in the first inning as a three-run double in the fourth.

Friday’s win secured the series victory for the Bluejays as Creighton also bested Georgetown 8-0 on Thursday. The win also pushed Creighton to 20-14 on the season and 5-3 in BIG EAST action, while Georgetown fell to 10-21 overall and 1-10 in conference play.

Creighton came out swinging from the jump as Lily West laced a leadoff single to left. One out later Madeline Vejvoda blasted her first home run of the season over the right field wall. One pitch later Sydney Potter connected for a solo home run, her eighth of the season, to left-center.

After the first scoreless inning of the series in the second, the Bluejay bats went back to work with two outs in the third. Two walks and an error loaded the bases for West. The Oklahoma native laced a three-run double off the glove of center fielder Claire Turner to make it 6-0. Moments later Cayla Nielsen laced an RBI single up the middle to make it 7-0.

Sydney Potter opened the fourth with a double to left field, then pinch runner Elly Beeson moved to third base on a wild pitch. With one down in the frame, Ella Dalton bounced an RBI single up the middle to set the stage for Schopfer to close the door.

In the circle Schopfer struck out five the first time she faced the Hoyas, then notched six straight out on ground balls to close the game. The first out of the fifth was the most dangerous play as Camryn Wincher laced a ball of Schopfer to Vejvoda at second. She calmly recorded the out at first and Schopfer finished the perfect game with grounders to shortstop and second base.

Offensively West, Nielsen and Potter each collected two hits. West closed the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, Nielsen was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Potter finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Schopfer needed just 58 pitches to earn the win (4-5), while Georgetown starter Avery Wissmar took the loss (1-4). Wissmar allowed eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and six walks in four innings.

The Bluejays and Hoyas complete the series on Saturday, March 30 with a 12:00 p.m. start time.
