BROOKLYN, N.Y.. — Baylor Scheierman became Creighton’s fifth men’s basketball player since 2014 to be selected in the NBA Draft on Wednesday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., when the 6-foot-7 guard was drafted in the First Round, No. 30 overall, by the Boston Celtics

Scheierman is the third Creighton product ever drafted by the Celtics franchise, joining Gene Harmon who was picked 107th overall in the sixth round in 1974 and George Morrow, who went 182nd overall in the 8th round in 1981. Among the active players selected 30th overall in the NBA Draft include Desmond Bane (2021), Josh Hart (2017) and Jimmy Butler (2011).

After three standout seasons at South Dakota State, including 2022 Summit League Player of the Year honors, Scheierman dominated in two years at Creighton. The Aurora, Neb., native became the 11th men’s player in NCAA history to score 1,000 points or more at multiple Division I schools.

As a senior, Scheierman was named a Second Team All-American by Field of 68 and 247Sports, and Third Team All-American by the AP, NABC, USBWA, ESPN.com, The Sporting News, CBSSports.com and College Hoops Today. The unanimous All-BIG EAST choice averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game while starting all 35 games for a Bluejay team that returned to the Sweet 16. He ranked first in BIG EAST in defensive rebounding, three-pointers per game and double-doubles, second in rebounding and minutes per game, fourth in scoring as well as free-throw percentage, and 10th in assists, assist/turnover ratio and in three-point percentage.

As a junior, Scheierman averaged 12.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game, leading CU’s Elite Eight squad with 87 three-pointers made while starting all 37 contests.

Scheierman used his versatility as an elite shooter, rebounder and passer to become the first men’s player in Division I history with at least 2,000 points (2,233), 1,000 rebounds (1,256), 500 assists (580) and 300 three-pointers (356). His 1,140 career defensive rebounds are the most of any player in the last 25 seasons, and he’s the only man since 1992-93 with 300 rebounds and 110 three-pointers in a season. He became the first Creighton player to ever have a points/rebounds/assists triple-double when he had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Georgetown on Feb. 13, 2024, and his 16 double-doubles led the BIG EAST and were the most by a Bluejay in one season since 1984-85.

Scheierman was a two-time candidate for the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award and three-time All-District selection. He was recognized as the USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week and BIG EAST Player of the Week in the first week of December, 2023, after averaging 22.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in lopsided wins at Oklahoma State and Nebraska. The southpaw sharpshooter was named to the All-South Regional Team in 2023 and All-Midwest Regional Team in 2024 for his postseason play.

After making a three-pointer in his final 10 games at SDSU, Scheierman opened his Bluejay career with a three-pointer in a Creighton-record 48 straight games, part of a stretch that saw him end his career with at least one triple in 81 of his final 82 games. He also made his final 31 free throws as a collegian, and became CU’s first player with back-to-back seasons of 300+ rebounds in 55 years.

Scheierman is Creighton’s fifth NBA First Round pick in history, and first since 2017 when Justin Patton went 16th overall to the Chicago Bulls, only to be traded a short time later to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Coached by Greg McDermott, Creighton finished the 2023-24 season with a 25-10 record, tied for second in the BIG EAST Conference, and reached the program’s third Sweet 16 in the last four years.
