Northeast sweeps Southwestern

NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College volleyball team returned to their home floor Wednesday night for a duel with Southwestern Community College at the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk. The Hawks took the contest by a final score of 3-0 in what was their sixth sweep of the season.

Northeast (9-3, 1-1 ICCAC) grabbed their first conference victory of the year behind 12 kills, four ace serves and 15 digs from Mya Hedstrom (O’Neill, Neb.). Hedstrom had a stretch in the second set where she complied three ace serves consecutively while Shaylyn Safranek (Merna, Neb.) tallied 24 assists. The Hawks will hit the road for another four-game tournament this weekend where they will battle No. 1 Cowley County Community College at 2 p.m. on Friday in Arkansas City, Kansas.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head Volleyball Coach Amanda Schultze on where her team is at so far this season:

“I like where we are with defense at the net,” Schultze said. “We are putting up a good block and we are getting good touches. We still need to get better at defense in the backcourt. I saw improvement in that tonight.”

Schultze on the opportunity to play the No. 1 team in the nation in Cowley County on Friday:

“I am excited to see how we matchup against them,” Schultze said. “I am excited for our girls to see that level of competition and see where they need to be at in order to get to the national tournament.

UP NEXT:

The Hawks will compete in a four-game tournament starting with contests against Pratt Community College at 12 p.m. Friday and No. 1 Cowley County Community College at 2 p.m. Friday in Arkansas City, Kansas.
