COLUMBUS, Neb. – Central Community College freshman Maleigha Johnson has been named as the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week.

During the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, Johnson totaled 122 digs in five matches, averaging 5.3 digs per set. In a match against Northeast Community College at the Pinnacle Bank Classic at CCC, she finished with a career-high 34 digs. The Raiders went 3-2 during the week.

“This really means a lot and shows that hard work does not go unnoticed,” said Johnson. “I’m always trying to work hard for my team and not let anything drop and get the best ball up for them. Receiving this honor feels great.”

Johnson is a 2024 graduate of Kearney Catholic High School where she was a four-year member of the varsity squad. She finished her Stars career with 974 digs with an average of 3.4 digs per set.

“Maleigha has been an anchor to our back court defense all season,” said CCC head coach Mary Young. “She has tremendous ball control and awareness on the court. Without question, she has been a great addition to our program.”

The Raiders are 14-12 on the season and will return to action on Friday with home match against Iowa Central Community College. The first serve is set for 2 p.m. at the Raider Fieldhouse.
