Morningside Volleyball splits matches at Siouxland Tournament

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – In its first matches of the season in Siouxland, the Morningside University women’s volleyball team split two matches on Friday during the Siouxland Volleyball Tournament. The two matches were played at the United Sports Academy.

The Mustangs (9-2) won their second match in a three-set sweep of Cottey in set scores of 25-8, 25-12, 25-13.

In the first set, the Mustangs ended it with an 8-0 run.

Hannah Janson started off the run with a kill, followed by kills from Sydney Marlow and Claire WilsonAleksandra Dalach had back-to-back service aces, then she had a kill of her own.

Morningside’s longest scoring run in set No. 2 was six late in the frame. Marlow closed out the set with a kill.

In the third set, Morningside led 24-7, and ended it with a Wilson kill, assisted by Dalach.

Wilson was the leading hitter with 13 kills, and she hit .545 in the nightcap. Marlow had 10 kills. Ten different Mustangs recorded a kill.

Seven different Morningside players earned an assist, led by Dalach with 18 and Dyrstad with 11.

Aureana Bernales and Marlow each had 13 digs, while Jacey Miller had 11.

Morningside hit .279 while it held Cottey to a minus -.020.

The Mustangs’ day started off with a match against No. 9 Jamestown, which was playing its first contest of the season. The Jimmies defeated Morningside 25-16, 27-25, 25-23. Wilson led the Mustangs with seven kills, while Marlow had six. Victoria Bouska and Adelyn Harris both had four.

Dyrstad and Dalach each had 14 assists.

Morningside will play a pair of matches Saturday in North Sioux City against Mayville State (11:30) and York (4:30).
