Fremont, Nebraska – Rain stayed away Monday afternoon and the weather allowed the Fremont Moo and Oahe Zap to play a doubleheader, wrapping up a weekend wrap-around series at Historic Moller Field. After dropping the first game of the three game series, Saturday night, Fremont won both games in the ILB matchup, 9-2 and 7-0.
In game one, Fremont scored nine runs off eight hits and committed no errors. Oahe plated two runs off four hits with two errors. Fremont starting pitcher Kadyn Van Hll pitched six strong innings in the seven-inning format, to earn his first victory of the season.
For one of the few times this season, Fremont got the scoring started, in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff batter Miles Meadows doubled off Oahe starter Brady Glenn. Two batters later, Stephen Espinoza hit an rbi double, scoring Meadows, to put Fremont ahead, 1-0. The next batter, Tyrus Petsche singled, bringing Espinoza home, and Fremont took a 2-0 lead.
The Moo extended the lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Parker Mooney drew a walk and Wyatt Yetter doubled, to put runners on second and third. The next batter, Dylan Brandenburg, hit a two-rbi single, scoring Mooney and Yetter, and Fremont led 4-0.
Fremont put together its biggest offensive inning in the bottom of the sixth. The Moo sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs. Brandenburg led off by reaching on a throwing error from Oahe third baseman Jackson Mix, then advanced to second on Zap reliever Julius Kass’ wild pitch. Kass walked Isaac Bonner, then uncorked two more wild pitches, scoring Brandenburg. The next batter, Cole Fowler, delivered an rbi groundout to shortstop, plating Bonner, to put Fremont ahead, 6-0. Miles Meadows drew a walk off Oahe reliever Julius Kass. Jake Hutter, came on to relieve Kass. The first batter Hutter faced was Bridger Coleman, who hit an rbi double, scoring Meadows, to make it 7-0, Fremont. Stephen Espinoza kept the inning going when he reached on an error by Oahe second baseman Trey Martin. Coleman scored to make it an 8-0, Moo lead. Tyrus Petsche followed with an rbi double, scoring Espinoza, and Fremont led 9-0.
In the top of the seventh, Oahe got on the scoreboard. Against Fremont reliever Hayden Kelberlau, Oahe’ s Tyler Hoffman doubled with one out. Leondra Guevara singled to put runners at first and third. Two batters later, Jacob Trusner doubled, scoring Hoffman and Guevara. However, Kelberlau got Brayden Byrum to ground out to shortstop to end the game, giving Fremont the game one victory, 9-2.
Kadyn Van HIll (1-1) earned the victory. The Omaha native at Wayne State College pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one hit, struck out six and walked one. Hayden Kelberlau, the Omaha native at Augustana, pitched 1.0 inning, giving up three hits and two runs.
Oahe’s Brady Glenn (0-2) took the loss. He pitched 5.0 innings, giving up six hits, four runs, struck out two and walked one. Julius Kass pitched 0.1 innings, giving up three unearned runs, walked two and had four wild pitches. Jake Hutter pitched 0.2 innings, giving up two hits and two unearned runs.
Offensively, Fremont’s Miles Meadows, a Solano Community College product from Fairfield, California, was 2-for-3. Bridger Coleman, from Allan Hancock College and Lompac, California, was 1-for-4 with an rbi. Stephen Espinoza, out of Charleston Southern University, and from Lompac, California, was 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Tyrus Petsche, a Lincoln native from Johnson County Community College, was 2-for-4 with a pair of rbi’s. Dylan Brandenburg, from Skyline College and San Carlos, California, was 1-for-3 with two rbi’s. Cole Fowler, out of Cerro Coso Community College, and Murrieta, California went 0-for-3, but drove in a run.
Oahe’s Jacob Trusner was 1-for-2 with an rbi.
In game two, Fremont got the bats going in the middle innings, which sparked a 7-0 victory. Moo starter Robert O’Malley pitched four strong innings for the victory.
Fremont (6-2) scored seven runs off eleven hits and committed no errors. Oahe (2-8) had no runs off two hits and had no errors.
The Moo began the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Tyrus Petsche doubled off Oahe starter Aiden Johnson, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter, Cooper Fuchino, grounded out to third, but scored Petsche, to put Fremont ahead, 1-0.
In the fourth inning, Dean Reynolds led off with a walk against Zap reliever Garrett Bergman. Isaac Bonner doubled to put runners at second and third, before Trey Brooks drew a walk to load the bases. The next batter, Hunter Snyder, was hit by a Bergman 2-2 pitch, to bring in Reynolds, and make it 2-0, Fremont. The next batter, Josh Blount drew a walk, scoring Bonner, to make it a 3-0, Moo lead.
Fremont added two more runs in the fifth inning. Grant Nottleman singled off Oahe reliever Jacob Skinner. Dean Reynolds did the same, to put runners at first and second. After Isaac Bonner grounded out, advancing the runners to second and third, Trey Brooks hit a two-rbi single, scoring Nottleman and Reynolds, to put Fremont ahead, 5-0.
Like the previous two innings, Fremont scored two runs, this time in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Blount led off with a single. Then, two batters later, Cooper Fuchino hit Fremont’s first home run of the season, a two-run blast over the left field fence, to put the Moo up, 7-0.
In the top of the seventh, Fremont reliever Logan Anderson struck out the first two batters before giving up a walk to Mason Lang and a single to Noah Wiggins. However, Anderson struck out Emiliano Curiel swinging on an 0-2 pitch to end the game, giving Fremont the 7-0 win, and the doubleheader sweep.
Fremont starter Robert O’Malley (1-0) earned the win. The Omaha native at Creighton University pitched 4.0 innings, giving up one hit, struck out seven and walked one. Baylor Hicks, a Columbia University product from Cumming, Georgia, pitched 2.0 innings, striking out one. Logan Anderson, the Omaha native at the University of Sioux Falls, pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one hit and struck out three.
Oahe’s Aidan Johnson (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 3.0 innings, giving up five hits, one run and walked one. Garrett Bergman pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one hit, two runs, struck out two and walked three. Jacob Skinner pitched 1.2 innings, yielding five hits, four runs, and struck out two. Jake Hutter pitched 0.1 inning and hit one batter.
Offensively, Fremont’s Josh Blount was 2-for-3. The DePere, Wisconsin native at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had two singles and an rbi. Cooper Fuchino, the Rolling Hills Estate, California native at Creighton University, was 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun and three rbi’s. Isaac Bonner, the University of Sioux Falls product from Omaha, was 2-for-3 and Trey Brooks, the San Jose State Spartan from Encino, California was 2-for-2 with a pair of rbi’s. Hunter Snyder, the Saint John, Indiana native at Columbia University, was 0-for-2, but drove in one run.
Oahe left Fremont dropping two of the three games in the series and the Zap will host the Nebraska Prospects on Wednesday.
Fremont will have Tuesday and Wednesday off before they open up a four-game series with the Spearfish Sasquatch, beginning Thursday night. Game one of the series and the fourth game of Fremont’s 13-game homestand, will begin at 7:05 p.m.
