Iowa State Volleyball falls in four to BYU

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-8, 2-3 Big 12) dropped the four-set match against No. 24 BYU (11-6, 4-3 Big 12). The set scores were 20-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-25 with the Cyclones winning the second.

Iowa State hit at .343 in the second, aiding the Cyclones to tie up the Cougars. ISU reached a set point opportunity in the third after falling behind 23-18, but BYU went on to take the match lead with a third frame score of 26-24. BYU commanded the fourth to win the match. Iowa State again fought while being without Maya Duckworth and Pam McCune.

Freshman Rachel Van Gorp had her first 10-plus kill match with 11 in just her second match playing front row. The rookie put up a tremendous performance, recording her first double-double with 14 digs. Van Gorp wasn’t done there, she also had her second five-plus ace match.

Iowa State served to a season-high 11 aces for the 24th match under Christy Johnson-Lynch to total 10 or more. Brooke Stonestreet had the next-highest ace total with three, while leading the match with 22 digs. It was her sixth 20-plus dig match of the season.

Lilly Wachholz had her eighth double-figure kill match of the season and second straight with 12 kills while Amiree Hendricks-Walker had her fifth as a Cyclone also with 12 kills.

SET ONE

A Stonestreet ace put the Cyclones up 3-0, but BYU took the next three to even the score. ISU continued to dial in aces as Van Gorp went back-to-back to extend a scoring run to four, making it 8-4, ISU. Hendricks-Walker remained hitting perfect with her third kill to keep the Cyclones up 13-9. With ISU up 15-11, BYU went on their way to flipping the lead in its favor at 18-17. BYU took over the set from there to win it 25-20.

SET TWO

Van Gorp again went back-to-back from the service line to total four aces and put ISU ahead 3-0. The Cyclones remained up 11-7 on Van Gorp’s fifth kill at an errorless clip of .625. The score went on to read 15-10 after Tierney Jackson laid down ISU’s sixth aces of the match, prompting a BYU timeout. The Cougars followed to cut their deficit to two at 19-17 as Iowa State then called a timeout of its own. Iowa State battled back finding set point at 24-18 after Lilly Wachholz’ seventh kill. The set would end with ISU up 25-19 after a Kiersten Schmitt kill.

SET THREE

Iowa State again took the early lead at 4-1, but BYU followed to go up 6-5. BYU held onto the lead, making it 15-12 to take the set to the media timeout. Wachholz would reach 10 kills and bring ISU within three (18-15), while Schmitt put up a solo wall next to cause a BYU timeout. Another Hendricks-Walker kill and a Morgan Brandt ace, the 10th of the match for ISU, then brought the Cyclones within a pair at 23-21. Iowa State battled on, retaking the lead and reaching set point on Hendricks-Walker’s ninth kill. BYU fought off the set point and pushed forward to take the set 26-24.

SET FOUR
After falling behind, ISU hit a run of five to lead 9-8 early capped with two Van Gorp kills as the freshman entered double figures. BYU took the lead back as the scoreboard stood at 16-13, with the Cyclones calling a timeout to follow. BYU controlled the set from there, taking the victory with a fourth set score of 25-15.
