Iowa State Volleyball defeats Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Iowa State (6-4, 0-0 Big 12) took the win over Colgate (2-8, 0-0 Patriot League) in four sets Thursday night with set scores of 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15.

Iowa State hit at .341 through the match, including at .444 in the fourth to dominate and take the set and victory 25-15. Lilly Wachholz led with 15 kills at an incredible hitting percentage of .480. Maya Duckworth had 13 kills at .294, also serving to two aces and a block to lead ISU with a 15.5 point performance. Kiersten Schmitt made for three in double figures with 12 kills, also putting up three blocks.

Morgan Brandt dialed in 53 assists, averaging 13.25 per set. Brandt had her third double-double of the season adding 12 digs to her stat line. The junior also send over four setter kills and totaled four blocks.

Brooke Stonestreet showed her defensive power with 26 digs to average 6.5 per set. Pam McCune led the Cyclone blockers for the sixth time this season with eight total (1 solo, 7 assisted).

SET ONE

An Amiree Hendricks-Walker kill and two aces by Duckworth put ISU up 3-0 to start. Faith DeRonde served up the Cyclones’ third ace, making it a 7-4 Iowa State lead. Schmitt made it a 17-10 advantage on her fourth kill on just five swings, and the Cyclones would go on to win the set 25-17, hitting at .382 and serving five aces. Hendricks-Walker led the set with five kills at .714 hitting.

SET TWO

After a 6-6 tie, Iowa State followed to go up 9-6 as Colgate called a timeout. The run extended to four straight out of the timeout with a Reaghan Larkin ace. ISU found a lead of five, but the Raiders trimmed that down to one midway through the set. Two straight Duckworth kills brought the Cyclones ahead 20-16, causing a Colgate timeout. The Raiders answered coming back to take a lead at 22-21 and the set 25-22.

SET THREE

Schmitt put down Iowa States’s seventh ace to give ISU a 4-2 lead. Colgate then flipped the lead in its favor, but Iowa State would take it back at 11-10 on a block put up by Brandt and McCune. Another block by the duo followed to force a Colgate timeout. The run stretched to eight capped on a Paula Krzeslak ace as ISU went ahead 17-10, while Colgate came back within three (19-16). Wachholz provided three crucial kills deep into the set, while the Cyclones went on to win the third 25-20.

SET FOUR
Colgate attack errors aided the Cyclones in running ahead 7-3, and would remain up throughout. McCune remained dominant putting up her eighth total block with a solo, making the scoreboard read 16-9. Iowa State reached 20 points on Duckworth’s 12th kill, as Colgate held 11 points. Duckworth tallied another to seal the victory at 25-15.

UP NEXT

Iowa State next heads to Syracuse for a matchup on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 12 p.m. CT to close the non-conference slate.
