AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) took the win over Iowa (4-1, 0-0 Big 10) in four sets (25-10, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18). It is ISU’s third straight win over Iowa and 32nd total in series history.

Iowa State now leads the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series 5-0 following football and volleyball’s victories. Iowa State played in front of a crowd of 5,523, the second largest volleyball crowd Hilton has seen.

Nayeli Gonzalez put up a phenomenal performance of 18 kills (4.5 per set) at an efficient .483 hitting percentage. Maya Duckworth also was in double figures with 10. Iowa State hit over .400 for the 16th time under Christy Johnson-Lynch through the match, including at .545 in the first and .481 in the second.

Amiree Hendricks-Walker led the blocking effort with six total while Rachel Van Gorp also shined defensively with 18 digs averaging 4.5 per set, while also serving to two aces.

SET ONE

Iowa State got out to a 5-1 start aided by Gonzalez nailing down three kills on three swings, while Iowa called the early timeout. ISU continued to pour on the offense, running ahead 12-4 while hitting at .750. Gonzalez continued her dominance hitting her sixth kill without an error at a .600 clip, making the score 23-8. ISU took the set 25-10, delivering 13 kills with just one error (.545 hitting).

SET TWO

Maya Duckworth collected her fifth kill on seven swings to make the scoreboard read 6-3 in the Cyclones’ favor. The second proved to be a closer one as the Hawkeyes drew within one at the midway point of the frame. ISU would hit a 4-0 run to hold an advantage of 18-13 as the Hawkeyes called a timeout. Iowa State would take a 2-0 match lead to the third winning the set 25-19. Gonzalez led the match with nine kills (.571 hitting percentage).

SET THREE

Iowa took its first lead in a set going up 5-4 early. Morgan Brandt followed to put down her third setter kill on four attempts to make it 7-6, ISU, but Iowa proceeded to go ahead 12-8 as Iowa State called a timeout. Iowa held the lead to take the set 25-19 and extend the match.

SET FOUR
Iowa State got back on track taking a 12-7 lead as Gonzalez hammered down her 17th kill at .519 hitting. Pam McCune made it a 17-12 advantage on he sixth kill at a .600 clip. Another McCune kill brought ISU to match point, while Iowa State would take the in-state win on a kill by Brandt and a fourth set score of 25-18.

Iowa State heads to Vermillion for the South Dakota Classic Sept. 13-15. ISU will meet UTEP Sept. 13, South Dakota Sept. 14 and Montana State Sept. 15.
