September 6th, 2024 | Jeff Axtell

The Howells-Dodge Volleyball Team is off to a 3-2 start this season. The Jaguars lost 3-0 at Oakland-Craig in the season opener last Thursday night in action that was aired on 107.9 the Bull before winning 2-0 over Randolph, Hartington-Newcastle, and Winside at the Howells-Dodge Tournament on Saturday, and then falling 3-0 at Clarkson/Leigh Tuesday night.

Jeff’s Oakland-Craig Recap:

The Knights won sets one and three 25-15 and set two 26-24. Kylie Brichacek had 7 kills and 9 digs for the Jaguars while Jade Bayer had 17 digs. Taylor Steffensmeier added 10 digs and 17 set assists while Peyten Becker and McKenzie Sindelar totaled 8 digs apiece.

Jeff’s Winside Recap:

Howells-Dodge won set one 25-10 and set two 25-12. Bayer had 9 digs while Becker compiled 8. Steffensmeier added 15 set assists.

Jeff’s Randolph Recap:

The Jaguars won set one 25-15 and set two 25-6. Steffensmeier and Riley Svehla each had 7 set assists.

Jeff’s Hartington-Newcastle Recap:

Howells-Dodge took set one 25-8 and set two 27-25. Brichacek led the way with 12 digs while Becker and Bayer each notched 10. Steffensmeier chipped in 7 set assists.

Jeff’s Clarkson/Leigh Recap:

The Patriots took sets one and three from the Jaguars by the score of 25-16, and won set two 25-13. Brichacek had 7 kills and 9 digs while Bella Koliha tallied 7 kills. Becker totaled 13 digs while Bayer contributed 12. Steffensmeier registered 7 digs and 18 set assists while Svehla had 9 set assists.

Jeff’s Tri County Northeast Triangular Preview:

Howells-Dodge (3-2) takes on Pender (2-2) and Tri County Northeast (1-2) at the Tri County Northeast Triangular Tuesday night. The Pendragons fell 2-1 to North Bend Central and 2-0 to GACC at the Northeast Nebraska Jean Groth Classic in Pender Thursday night while the Wolfpack fell 2-0 to Homer and 2-1 to Humphrey-Lindsay at the Homer Triangular Thursday night.

Jeff’s Take on the Contests:

Both Pender and Tri County Northeast started the season strong, and played well in one of their matches Thursday night. Howells-Dodge’s losses are to two of the best teams in the State in C-1 and C-2. This should be a very competitive Triangular all the way around. I think the Jaguars have a respectable chance to win it, but Pender and Tri County Northeast will both be tough to go up against and will give Howells-Dodge their best shot.
