The National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office has issued an Excessive Heat Warning, which is in effect until 8:00 tonight, Monday, June 24.
The warning is in effect for the Nebraska counties of Thurston, Wayne, Cuming, Burt, Dodge, Washington, Saunders, Douglas, Sarpy, Lancaster and Cass; along with the Iowa counties of Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie and Mills.
This includes the cities of Logan, Walthill, Woodbine, Oakland, Council Bluffs, La Vista, Onawa, Dunlap, Lyons, Bellevue, Wayne, Tekamah, West Point, Decatur, Mapleton, Omaha, Ashland, Glenwood, Pender, Blair, Lincoln, Macy, Wahoo, Yutan, Papillion, Missouri Valley, Wisner, Fremont, Winnebago, and Plattsmouth
WHAT…Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 expected. Heat indices up to 115 will be possible in urban areas.
WHERE…Portions of southwest and west central Iowa and east central, northeast, and southeast Nebraska.
WHEN…From 1 PM this afternoon to 8 PM CDT this evening.
IMPACTS…Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay informed.
