Briar Cliff Baseball takes Doubleheader from Morningside

The Charger baseball team went 2-0 on the day against cross-town rival Morningside Friday afternoon at Mercy One Field.
 
Game 1 – W, 5-4
 
After three scoreless innings, the Chargers carded the first run of the game after a sacrifice groundout from Cade Marquardt to drive in Cam Reimer. The Mustangs would take a 2-1 lead after a two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth inning.
 
In the top of the seventh and down to their final out, an error committed by the Mustangs led to a Diego Trujillo reaching second base. Reimer at the dish recorded a RBI-single up the center of the infield to tie the game 2-2.
 
In the top of the eighth, Damon Schmid recorded a one-out single followed by a single from Easton Cone put runners in scoring position. Walker Moore drew a walk to load the bases. Jared Sitzmann capitalized on the scoring opportunity, driving in two with a double to left field to put the Chargers up 5-2.
 
The Mustangs would not shy away, as a two-run homer with one out cut it to a one run game. Rance Bryant retired the final two batters to preserve the 5-4 victory.
 
Kyler Steinborn gave the Chargers a solid outing, tossing 6.2 innings while giving up two runs on five hits while striking out seven. Sitzmann went five-for-two at the plate with two RBIs. Reimer went two-for-four at the dish with an RBI and run scored.
 
Game 2 – W, 6-4
 
The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the first following a RBI-double from Reimer and a RBI-single from Marquardt.
 
In the top of the fifth Marquardt recorded his second RBI-single with a shot to right field to drive in Sitzmann.
 
Trailing by one heading into the final frame, a three-run blast from Marquardt put the Chargers up 6-4.
 
Carter Schorg got the start on the bump, throwing 5.2 innings while giving up three runs and striking out five. Logan Barboa came in the bottom of the sixth and earns the win after allowing 1 hit and striking out two.
 
Marquardt went a perfect three-for-three at the plate with five RBIs and drawing a walk.
 
The Chargers improved to 16-13 (9-3 GPAC) and will face Morningside on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
