Briar Cliff Baseball takes Doubleheader from Mayville State

Drew Petersen had a monster day at the plate, recording three home runs and leading the Chargers to a sweep over the Comets of Mayville State Tuesday afternoon at Sisters of St. Francis Field. Peterson hit a two-run walk-off homer to give the Chargers a 7-5 come from behind win and boosted the Chargers to a 6-5 victory in game one.
 
Game one – W, 6-5
 
The Chargers looked to their bullpen during the midweek contest, as Owen Lester got the opening innings. He tossed three innings while allowing two runs across five hits.
 
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Petersen launched his first homer of the day, a solo-blast over the right field fence to cut the Comet’s lead to 2-1.
 
In the bottom of the sixth and trailing 5-1, the Charger offense got hot after Jared Sitzmann recorded a walk followed by a double from Cam Reimer put runners on second and third with no outs. Petersen again went deep, a three-run shot to cut the lead to 5-4.
 
With runners at first and third, Cade Marquardt came in to pinch hit and hit a triple to the right field corner to put the Chargers up 6-5.
 
Rance Bryant came in to close out the contest for the Cliff on the mound, striking out his first batter faced. He would walk the next batter, to set up a double play. Bryant forced a ground ball and the Cliff rolled a 4-6-3 double play to preserve the victory.
 
Petersen in the contest went two-for-three with four RBIs in the contest.
 
Game two – W, 7-5
 
Garret Weberg got the opening innings for the Chargers, tossing three innings while allowing two runs and striking out three.
 
Trailing by two in the bottom of the first, a two-run double from Jake Chronic tied the game for the Chargers.
 
The Comets would tack on three runs across the fifth and sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Walker Moore hit a double to left center field to put runners on second and third with two outs. Sitzmann at the plate belted a three-run homer over the right center field wall to tie the game for the Chargers. Reimer followed up with a single to put the go-ahead runner aboard with Petersen up next at the plate.
 
In a clutch moment, Petersen again delivered for the Chargers, a two-run shot over the right field wall gave the Chargers a 7-5 walk off win.
 
The Chargers improved to 15-13 on the season and will now look to their four-game series against cross-town rival Morningside. The Chargers and Mustangs will begin the weekend series on Friday at 1 p.m. at Mercy Field.
