Briar Cliff Baseball takes Doubleheader from Dordt

The Charger bats were on fire Thursday evening in Sioux Center, Iowa, as they swept the Defenders of Dordt 18-2 and 14-9.
 
Game 1
 
Out the gate, the Cliff placed runners at the corners with no outs after a leadoff single from Diego Trujillo and Walker Moore reached base on an error to put the Chargers in scoring position. The Chargers would quickly accrue two outs via strikeouts, before Rance Bryant’s two-run double followed by a RBI single from Jared Sitzmann put the Chargers up 3-0.
 
The Chargers put up eight runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 11-0 lead highlighted by Bryant recording two RBI-hits in the inning. Cam Reimer also recorded an RBI-single in the rally. Drew Petersen capped of the scoring for the Chargers with a two-run blast.
 
Bryant went a perfect four-for-four at the plate, netting five RBIs and scored three runs. Jake Chronic scored four runs and went two-for-two. Trujillo in the leadoff spot went three-for-four on the game.
 
The Charger pitching staff allowed just one earned run, as Kyler Steinborn tossed five innings and recorded four strikeouts. Tyler Kjose and Nelson Cone each pitched an inning in relief.
 
Game 2
 
The Charger bats stayed hot, as both Trujillo and Reimer recorded solo-blasts to put the Chargers up 2-0.
 
In a reverse from game one, the Defenders scored six runs to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the second. In the top of the fourth, Damon Schmid drew a bases-loaded walk, followed by a sac-fly from Trujillo to cut the Defenders lead 7-5.
 
The Cliff in the top of the sixth scored six runs, capped by Peyton Grant scoring on an error to put the Chargers up 11-8.
 
Bryant shut the door on a Defenders comeback, as he recorded a bases clearing triple in the top of the seventh to put the Cliff up 14-9.
 
Moore went three-for-five at the dish with three runs scored in the contest. Owen Lester earned the win on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings while recording six strikeouts. Bryant showed his two-way prowess, closing the final two innings on the mound and recorded four strikeouts.
 
The Chargers improved to 10-12 (3-1 GPAC) and will prepare to take on Dakota Wesleyan next Thursday in Mitchell, South Dakota. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. with game two to follow after.
