Gladys Coufal, 87, formerly of Howells passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the Clarkson Community Care and Rehab Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, January 26 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Howells with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. with a vigil service held at 7 p.m. all at the church. Visitation will resume Thursday from 9:30 until10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery with lunch following at the Howells Catholic Social Hall. Svoboda Funeral Home of Schuyler is handling arrangements for the family. Memorials can be directed towards the Howells Community Catholic School, Howells Volunteer Fire and Rescue, or Family Wishes.

Gladys Arlene (LodI) Coufal was born in Schuyler, NE to Milo and Agnes (Hamsa) Lodl. She grew up on a farm north of Schuyler. She was involved in 4-H and helped on the farm with the many chickens, ducks and geese. They also had a big garden and many flowers. Gladys graduated from Schuyler High School in 1953.

On April 10, 1956, Gladys was united in marriage to Leonard Coufal at Trinity Catholic Church in Heun. They farmed northwest of Howells raising crops, cattle, hogs and chickens. She was always by Leonard’s side working outside. When not outdoors, she was a great homemaker busy with cooking, baking, canning, embroidering, sewing and raising their two daughters.

In 2003, they moved to Howells. Gladys moved to the Clarkson Community Care Center in March of 2018.

Gladys was a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. She loved playing cards, playing bingo, word search books and assembling puzzles. Her family was her pride and joy.

Chad (Holly) Doerneman of Omaha, NE and children, Jude, Sylvie and Thomas

Brittany Doerneman of Omaha, NE

And many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard, in 2004, and two brothers Lambert Lodl and Leonard Lodl.
