A reported vehicle fire has closed down main transportation routes in the Panhandle Monday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., the Nebraska Department of Roads issued closures in both directions for Highway 71 from US 30 near Kimball to US 26 in Scottsbluff for a vehicle fire.

At about the same time, NDOT issued a closure of Highway 88 from Highway 71 to US 385 in Bridgeport, also said to be for a vehicle fire.

Shortly before 4 p.m., John Lutz with NDOT said the Highway 71 closure both directions had been reduced to between Harrisburg and Kimball, while the Highway 88 closure was limited to westbound traffic only from Bridgeport to Highway 71.

KNEB News has reached out to authorities for additional details.
